The Desolation of Smaug Trailer!!

If you haven't Checked it out already, here is the brand spanking new trailer for the next installment in The Hobbit trilogy, "The Desolation of Smaug"  :D

After Earth

Greetings followers.
It has been quite some time.. Unfortunately the stress of assignments and other issues of the real world have interfered with any reviews being posted :(
But that's okay because we are back today with the much anticipated movie 'After Earth' which was released today.
Basic plot of this movie is that humans have left earth many years ago because we pretty much screwed ourselves over by destroying the planet with pollution and all that. So now we are set many years in the future and mankind lives on another planet called something like nova 1, but there's a problem... When humans first arrived on Nova 1, we came across some alien race that obviously wanted to destroy this threat. Basically the aliens are blind and can smell fear, so there is a unique group of soldiers called "ghosts"... People without fear who come along and sass the aliens up.
Jumping forward to the present day, and without giving too much away on the movie, we have a famous general soldier (Will Smith) who is never home and his son (Jayden Smith) who wants to prove to him that he is a worthy fighter.
Now this is where my major problem was with the movie. The son was just a whinny little prat 90% of the movie...
When I look back on the film, I think the idea is fantastic.. Just they could have done it a lot better, and probably chosen a different actor for to play the son. On top of that they could have done a better job with taking you on more of a journey with the characters.. Nothing changes with them until the last half hour and it doesn't flow very well.
Visually this movie is really good! Seeing Earth and how it's adapted after thousands of years without humans was pretty cool but again they could have spent more time developing the story around it.
Overall I would give After Earth a 5/10 and that's being generous. Maybe wait for this one to come out on DVD.

Quite a few movies to look forward to in the next few weeks so keep an eye out for more uploads :)

Peace!

I Am Iron Man

Tony stark. One of the most common superhero names in today's world of pop culture.
As we all know iron man 3 came out last week and of course I went and saw it as soon as I possibly could, I mean come on.. Who wasn't excited as a child in a candy store when they saw the trailers?...
I have heard a lot of people say that it wasn't that great of a movie but I beg to disagree.. Firstly, it's Iron man and he kicks ass.
I can see where people were disappointed because there wasn't as much action as expected and tony did spend a good majority of the movie complaining about himself, just like Bruce Wayne did in the dark knight rises... But if you look past that then you will enjoy it.
Of those people that have said bad things about the film, most have gone to watch it again so there must be something good!
One of my most favourite characters would have to be Trevor. Without giving too much away, he is pretty much the turning point of the whole story.
As we all know, marvel films always tend to stick a little scene right at the end of the credits... It's really not worthy to wait around to see this one. I mean we know Avengers 2 is in production and I think it will be amazing no matter what, so don't feel the need to sit through almost 10min of credits just to see the iron man will be back.
Overall I would recommend going along to this, definitely if you have seen the others and avengers as it follows straight on from the events in New York.

Seeing as it has been a while since I last posted, I have managed to squeeze in another movie in these last few days. The Evil Dead.
Now what a horror movie this was, if anything, just go see it!
The slogan they have given it is "the scariest movie you will ever see" ... Hmmmmm, nah I wouldn't agree with that, but never the less, it is pretty damn scary.. And not to mention gory as well. Just what a good ol' horror movie should be.
Of course, don't go along looking for an in depth story line or great character development, because you won't find any trace of it. Even with a bit of a twist at the end, it's no big surprise.
Now 'The Evil Dead' is only showing in a select few cinemas so I would encourage you to go along if you can, preferably not by yourself... And have a good night of fun and being grossed out!

As for the music side of things this week I have been far too busy with work to be able to buy a new cd.. Which makes me very sad.
But being released this week is the new Eagles documentary which pretty much tells the whole story from beginning till today. I'm looking forward to this very very much so next week I might do a review on an album of theirs.
And also!! How could i forget, it is New Zealand Music Month!! So we should probably have a few bit and pieces from that category..
Bit of a short post this week, but have a few good things to be looking forward to, including StarTrek next week :D
But that is all for now

Till next time

Olympus has fallen

It's weird.
I sit here for countless minutes, watching the time pass by trying to think of a clever way to begin this entry...
I haven't come up with anything so I guess we'll get straight into things :)

This weeks movie was "Olympus has Fallen". And to get down to it, I thought it was brilliant!
Now comes the difficult task of breaking it down for you without giving away any spoilers...
Well firstly the story is about an ex secret service agent getting thrown head first into action again when a Korean terrorist group decides to attack the White House.
Now you might be thinking.. Well that's going to be pretty average.. How can you set a whole movie inside one house? To be honest I was thinking the exact same thing, but to my surprise they pulled it off spectacularly!
I must give you a bit of a warning though, they do not hold back on the ruthlessness during the film. Some of the kills are something you would picture seeing on some crazy video game or something.. In saying that, the movie could probably be seen as a game of Call of Duty played out on the big screen.
One of the few things I would criticise about the film would be the constant little update subtitles that kept popping up. Oh, my, god. Yes yes I know they were trying to make it look realistic and so on, but after the first few have interrupted your viewing you will just end up rolling your eyes each time a new one pops up informing you about what room they are in or who is speaking...
Other than that small nit pick I would highly recommend going along to see this :)

In other news, I recently treated myself to new Jimi Hendrix album "People, Hell and Angels".
Straight up, this album is a must own.
The album is made up of a bunch of tracks previously un released, and have been touched up by modern drum tracks just to fill in those empty gaps. We all know that Hendrix introduced us to more than our fair share of mesmerising riffs, and it has been great being able to see more of an insight to the songs that could have been.
Although... There is one thing...
Now we all know Hendrix, rock star of the 1960's
And then let me introduce Steve Vai, modern guitarist of near equal amazingness.
I have a little task for you guys if you feel willing to witness the weirdness of the world of music, have a listen to "Villanova junction blues" by Jimi Hendrix, which is off this album.

Done that?
Good.
Lets take a minute to remember this was recorded some time in the 60's, never released, never heard apart from those in the studio at the time.
Now we fast forward to modern day recordings, have a listen to "Tender surrender" by Steve Vai.

:O
...
Right?
How is this even possible? Two different time eras, two different people with two different lives. And yet, we have relatively the same song!
Just goes to show how amazing music can be I guess. Which is why we love it so much.

That is all for tonight, and I will leave you with a foreign, yet creative version of "voodoo child", played on a traditional Chinese instrument.

Enjoy :)

FIRST!!!

First post of the season! First post of the year! First post all together really...

Hello and welcome to Rusty Readings :)
Here you will pretty much find me going on about anything exciting that is happening. Although to be perfectly frank, I am going to be telling you about movies and music because lets face it, thats what I love.

Now being new to this whole blog thing, I wouldn't expect this first post to have much in it. It had the option of going one of two ways. I could either go on and on about all the movies I have ever seen, all the albums I have ever listened to and we could be here for quite some time.. Or, I could just do a general introduction and add in my 2 cents worth of all those wonderful things in future posts.

I guess I should tell you a little bit about myself if we are going to journey through this together.
My name is Rhys, and I am a 21 year old living in the brilliant country of New Zealand. I have found myself in my last year of study, (quite scary..) where i will hopefully propel myself into the diverse world of Audio Engineering!
My interests pretty much cover anything imaginable, well, not quite that many things but you get the picture.

For the last few weeks I have been purchasing a new CD every week. I think this habit is quite good as I have expanded my musical knowledge, and I hope to share this knowledge with you guys because sharing is caring and all that jazz.
Ha.. Yea.. Another thing you will have to get use to is my humour.. But if you have read this far then I have faith in you my friend!

Well i guess that will be all for tonight, hopefully posts will start rolling up more frequently in the next few days. The plan is to go and see "Olympus has Fallen" on thursday, so at least you can defiantly look forward to a juicy review then.

Till next time,

Rusty Rhys.
